How insulin works
Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas. It controls the amount of glucose in your blood, and helps your body use glucose as energy. Replacing insulin helps your body balance your blood glucose levels, and keeps glucose in a safe range. Since pancreas function tends to get worse naturally over time, most people with Type 2 diabetes end up needing to take insulin at some point.
