Metabolic syndrome
When a person has "Metabolic syndrome," it means there are several reasons why they are more at risk for heart disease and diabetes. The number-one reason is usually that they carry extra weight in their mid-section. This is a more dangerous figure, because it means there is excessive fat packed in between your internal organs. People with metabolic syndrome often have high blood glucose levels -- called "hyperglycemia", high blood pressure -- called "hypertension", low levels of "good" cholesterol -- called HDL, and high levels of fat in their blood. One in four Canadians is believed to have Metabolic Syndrome, so talk to your doctor about your risk factors.
