Lowering alcohol consumption

People who drink in moderation have a slightly lower risk of developing heart disease than people who drink too much, or not at all. Alcohol can actually increase the amount of good cholesterol in your blood -- and good cholesterol helps to sweep the bad cholesterol out of your system. It can also lower blood pressure, make your blood less susceptible to clotting, and increase your body's ability to dissolve blood clots. Doctors recommend no more than one or two drinks a day -- and a weekly limit of nine drinks for women, and 14 drinks for men. But people who drink daily and heavily are actually damaging their heart -- not helping it. If you think you're drinking more alcohol than necessary, talk to your doctor about ways to cut down.
