Prevention of risk factors

It's important to be aware of your risk factors the ones you're born with, and the ones you can control.

Your risk for heart disease increases as you get older, and that's out of your control.

Men are at greater risk once they reach their 50's, and women are more at risk once they reach menopause.

You're more at risk if you have parents or siblings who developed heart disease before they were 55.

First Nations people and those of African or South Asian descent are also more at risk. If you have diabetes, your risk is more than doubled.

Even if heart disease runs in your family, there are still risk factors that you can control - such as your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, stress levels, and whether you smoke or drink heavily.
